Nobody Cares about Ouran

July 21, 2010 at 9:16 pm (Anime, Formal Announcements, Ouran High School Host Club)

So I guess this is my first post on this here blawg, even though I’ve had access for what, nearly two weeks? Anyway, now that important introductions are over and stuff (not like they were even necessary to begin with), time for me to start getting on with the actual post. Not that part of the reason that I have not posted on here yet is that writing a typical blog post takes around an hour of my time, for reasons that will probably be sufficiently revealed in the paragraphs to follow.

Abstract: the goal of this blog post is to discuss the State of the Union, draw meaningful conclusions from the information contained within the walls of text, and then to discuss the implications of the meanings of the state of the union, in particular, those being the consequences of the actions of the implications of the meanings behind the words contained in the state of the union. And now we cut away for a read the rest of this entry tag.

So here’s what’s going on. I’ll get to the explaining of the post title in a bit. We’ve officially announced two projects, Ouran Koukou Host Club and Viewtiful Joe. Right now, I am basically the only person working on either of them. I am also attending seven hours of classes a day and I am doing other sub work for some people I know who asked me to (no names, lest I incur unwanted DRAMA).  My new Japanese teacher is basically horrible, which means that the course has essentially turned into a DIY learning process, and that means I’m going to have to spend a lot more time doing work and teaching it to myself than I had planned. This, of course, requires resource reallocation, which means that I’m going to have to cut expenses somewhere else.

Basically the story is this. I’m putting Ouran on haitus for probably the rest of the next two weeks. It’s the biggest time sink in my schedule right now, and, (time for me to explain the title) I’m not sure how many people are even going to bother with it. Anyone who really cares probably has copies of it. Considering EnterTheBlog did it and in over a year their torrent has only been downloaded ~200 times, which isn’t very many (especially when you consider ETB is related to nitephire, who is widely regarded for high quality DVD encodes). So, basically, since Ouran takes a lot of time (since I’m basically doing the encoding, subbing and timing by myself) , it’ll get worked on when I have more time, ie after school is done.

That said, let’s take a look at our current lineup of projects, and the benefits of each.

First of all, Ouran. Originally, I wanted to convert Lunar’s subs directly into softsubs. Then I realized that Lunar’s translation is barely readable in plain English. So, what I’m going to do is mix and match them with the R1 subs with a preference on whichever translation fits my fancy for any given line. Maybe not what people are looking for, but if you take the best of both, you should end up with something better than either. Coming along with the whole ‘Lunar’ motif is keeping their styling. Sure, the font they chose looks a bit like Comic Sans, but it’s NOT comic sans, and I think it does a good job of being interesting without impairing readability.

The reason why Viewtiful Joe is still on my schedule is that a) I don’t have to waste hours of time timing and styling and editing subs, b) nobody really cares if the video looks like crap, so I don’t have to really bother with any filtering whatsoever (although some would argue that filtering will MAKE a good source look like crap. That’s what moderation is for). Thus, simply encoding (which can be done when I’m not on the computer), trimming and muxing audio is pretty easy to do. If I focus on what’s more likely to finish, then maybe it’ll actually get finished. I really wish that we had access to the R2s so I didn’t have to deal with hearing an earcancer dub when I was trying to make sure the audio was sync’d. And also, lol dubtitles. I’m still debating whether or not to include those. It’s not like they’re hard to OCR or anything.

So, the moral of the story is that I’m still working on stuff, but sometimes you have to rearrange your priorities, and right now, I’ve hit that point. Guess we’ll become famous by doing stuff nobody cares about. And we’ll have to half-ass it anyway, since, as has been stated, Viewtiful Joe was never completely released on DVD anywhere. Yeah us!

Ninja edit – For those who still really give a damn about this mess of a group, we’ll be releasing some of the Tommy Heavenly6 PVs sometime. They’re in translation (more like transliteration, since half of the damn lyrics are engrish), and should be encoded… eventually =3
